Meet MOUNTAINCITY’s Self-Proclaimed Biggest Fan, Austin Asay!

Austin Asay lives in Billings, Montana and says it isn’t unusual to hear him belting out MountainCity songs wherever he goes!

Austin Asay of Billings, Montana says he is MountainCity’s biggest fan.

(Billings, MT)  Dave Powers, lead guitarist and male vocalist of the husband-wife musical duo known as MountainCity, introduced us to Austin Asay.

“Austin calls himself our biggest fan,” Dave said. “And that might actually be true!”

Austin, originally from Cody, Wyoming, plays MountainCity music at a coffee shop in Billings, Montana where he currently lives, and is known to sing along– loudly.

“He sends me videos of himself singing our songs in a variety of different locations,” Dave told us.

Austin admits he’s sent Dave videos of himself singing to MountainCity at the top of his lungs in heavy traffic, and serenading his cousins with their songs. He’s not officially “auditioning,” he slips in playfully, but also says, “Whatever happens, happens.”

Recently, Austin sent Dave and Tara a video of himself singing, Ours Is My Favorite at a wedding in Billings. “He did a great job,” Dave said. “We posted that video on the MountainCity Facebook page and it got over 9000 views. I think Austin was pretty stoked.”

Dave told us Austin loves music and is a genuine soul. “We like him very much and we’re honored to have such an amazing fan and contributor to our Loudmouth Crew.”

We tracked Austin down recently to learn a little more about him. Here is what we found out.

Q: Pretend you’re auditioning for American Idol. Tell us what we need to know about you!

AUSTIN: I currently live in Billings, Montana where I am a Children’s Ministry Intern at Harvest Church. I plan to go to college and get my degree, and be a Children’s Pastor.

I am a music-lover. I’m usually singing at the top of my lungs, or laughing really hard at something. I am a natural kid at heart.

I  blame this on my nephews: I love Paw Patrol. I am also a big fan of dramatic medical shows. Grey’s Anatomy is probably the best TV show on the face of this earth. I am usually searching the kids tab on Netflix or watching the latest episode of Grey’s.

But music has always played a big role in my life.

Q: You recently covered a MountainCity song at a wedding. The video got 9000 views on Facebook. You’re a wedding singer now. Tell us about that.

AUSTIN: I was blown away by the amount of views. That was my 30 seconds of fame. The bride and groom are volunteers in the youth ministry at church. They know how much I love to sing and when they asked me, I chose “Ours is My Favorite.”

I have always wanted to sing it at a wedding. It’s my favorite MountainCity song. It’s saying that everyone has a good love story. But calling the one that you’re part of ‘your favorite,’ is pretty special.

Singing at weddings is cool – you get to be part of the big day. It was so amazing! So, give me a call. I’ll sing at your wedding. 🙂  MountainCity on Facebook

Q: We just happen to have access to the video:

Q: You’re obviously at ease performing. What’s your musical background?

AUSTIN: I have been singing at the top of my lungs since I was little. My singing eventually caused a rule of no singing in the car whenever we would go on roadtrips.

I sang in school choirs growing up and played saxophone in the band. I also play piano. In high school, I was part of the Advanced Mixed Choir called Synergy. I also served on the Worship Team at my local church.

When I wasn’t doing that I was discovering new music so I can jam in my car, and get those weird looks at the stop lights.

I may or may not be able to sing every single High School Musical song or anything off the Mamma Mia soundtrack. And I am not ashamed to say that I know every single word and every single move to the song Dancing Queen.

Q: What’s Austin Asay’s super-power?

AUSTIN: I am known for working with kids, doesn’t matter the age. You will always find me hanging out with kids. I might even say that some of my best friends are 2nd graders. People have told me that I have one really great superpower, which is entertaining a mass number of people. With my type of personality, I fuel on people. And I’m a goof. So it all ties together.

Q: Besides MountainCity, what are you listening to recently?

My favorite jam right now is Castaway by Brett Eldredge. It is a slower song but has a really cool story behind it. I choose my favorite songs by looking up the meanings.

Q: What one song would you like to hear playing every time you walk into a room?

AUSTIN: The new Carrie Underwood song The Champion is a pretty awesome song. The lyrics say,

“I am invincible, unbreakable, unstoppable, unshakable

They knock me down, I get up again, I am the champion

You’re gonna know my name , you can’t hurt me now

I can’t feel the pain, I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win

I am the champion

I would feel like a boss having that song being played every single time I walked into a room. It would boost my confidence by about 9 billion!

Q: What if you actually did audition for American Idol, what song would you sing?

AUSTIN: This is a hard one because of my very wide variety of music tastes. But I think Dancing On My Own by Calum Scott would be my audition song. It is a song that is in my vocal range that I belt out in the car, shower, office or wherever I feel like I need to burst out into song.

Austin Asay, MountainCity “Loudmouth “Gold Promoter”

Q: How long have you been a MountainCity fan? How did you get connected with Dave and Tara?

AUSTIN: I’m pretty sure that I was the first fan that wasn’t family!

I first heard Dave and Tara at Life Conference in St Louis in 2012. They were from Denver and I was from Cody, Wyoming, which are close in proximity. I connected with them on Facebook and later saw the post about them starting a band. I thought it sounded cool and they were really good!

I made sure I was on Facebook to watch every live concert and to share every single post. So, one day, Dave messaged me on Facebook and told me that I have what it takes to be a ‘Loudmouth’ and I gladly accepted it.

Q: Some might conclude that you’re the best MountainCity promoter around.  What are some of the things you do to help promote the band, as their “biggest fan?”

AUSTIN: To be the ‘best,’ like me?  I don’t want to give away too many of my secrets. But you need to have every single lyric of every single song memorized. You can’t be afraid of making a fool of yourself when you hear someone playing MountainCity music. You have to be telling people to look them up. Because MountainCity is going to be their new favorite band.

Also, MountainCity is really active on social media. I tell people, GO FOLLOW THEM! But for Instagram, you need to turn on post notifications so you can be the first one to like the posts.

Q: Do you plan to continue being a MountainCity ‘Loudmouth’ for awhile?

AUSTIN: I will be a Loudmouth until I meet my Maker! It is so much fun being able to tell everyone about MountainCity! I am always telling people about how Dave and Tara are just really good people, the coolest people you’ll ever know in your life.

Thanks, Austin Asay!  You are a great friend and fan!
