MountainCity’s Favorite Songs

(Denver, CO)  Dave and Tara Powers, the married duo behind the voices, melodies and lyrics of MountainCity’s original music, have both enjoyed a variety of musical styles over the years.

We decided to ask them for the 4-1-1 on their favorite songs and artists through the years. Here is what we found out.

What were your first favorite songs ever? As youngsters?

Tara

  • “You are my sunshine”
  • “Isn’t He”
  • “Our God is an Awesome God”

Dave

Probably a song by Ron Kenoly, called “All Honor.” Or maybe the Monday Night Football theme song.

Favorite songs/artists during elementary school years:

Tara

Dave

Music wasn’t on my radar much in elementary. Playing soccer was my jam!

What were your favorite songs/artists at the age of 13?

Tara

I loved Boyz ll Men and BeBe and CeCe Winans.

Dave

Maybe Jesus Freak by DC Talk?

Favorite songs at the important ages of 16, 18, and 21?

Tara

Dave

At 16, probably some song by Darrell Evans. At 18, probably “Now Behold The Lamb” by Kirk Franklin  or the song “Can You Take Me Higher” by Creed. Ha!

How did your taste in music change or solidify during your teen years?

Tara

I have ALWAYS loved so many musical styles. Throughout my teenage years I listened to soul, worship, punk rock, emo, ska, gospel, pop, R&B, folk…oh man-I’ve loved it ALL!

Dave

I was listening to a lot of worship music from 16-20.

Favorite types of music as you became adults?

Tara

I really cannot decide! I have loved it all!!

Dave

When I was 20, I started listening to a bunch of country music, and then Tara started introducing me to a vast amount of music from 21 (when I first met her) onward.

Tell us a song or two you have just heard in the past few weeks that you have started playing on repeat?

Tara

“Duet” by Penny and Sparrow

Dave

There’s a song by Rita Springer called “Defender” that I’ve had on repeat in the last few weeks. So good!

What kind of playlists do you listen to on Spotify? What are your three favorites?

Tara

All of these playlists can be found on our Spotify channel.

  1. For dinner parties – Louis Armstrong, Jazz and 1940’s Music
  2. For yard work – Pop and dance tunes
  3. For watching sunsets from our backyard – Acoustic folk

Dave

I like these. All of these playlists are on our Spotify channel as well.

  1. “Country Love Songs”
  2. “Cruisin’ Love Songs Collection”
  3. “Acoustics and Covers”

Maybe if we listen to all the music they enjoy we’ll be able to write and sing like MountainCity!?

Dave would like to thank his sponsor, Grosh Guitars

Dave says,

“Man, I love Grosh Guitars! I’ve had the privilege of being a part of their Family of Artists since 2010, and I’ll tell ya, I haven’t played on a better electric guitar in my life! The action is unbelievable, the craftsmanship and quality are untouchable. The hand-wound pickups are like a giant pile of butter (compliments of Dani Grosh), and Don Grosh, along with all the peeps on their team are GREAT people! I highly recommend you check out their stuff! These guitars are made in the good ol’ U.S.A., which makes me very happy!
